Description

“Cats at window” — two black cats stand side by side on a windowsill, looking out at a night town under a large crescent moon. The picture is quiet and slightly naive, painted in thick strokes.

What the picture shows

The cats are seen from behind, their silhouettes outlined with a dotted line of light beads, their whiskers and ears drawn in thin lines. Beyond the window is a deep blue sky scattered with white stars and an orange crescent; below it lean little houses with warm windows in orange, ochre and red brushwork. A burgundy curtain hangs on the left, and a stack of books with coloured spines lies on the sill to the right. The blue window frame is filled with rows of sky-blue beads. The beading is partial: beads mark the cats' outlines, the moon, the stars, the frame, the books and the rooflines, while the painterly background with its open brushstrokes stays as print on the canvas.
