What the picture shows

A dozen large open blooms rise up the canvas on thin curving stems. The petals are worked in gradients — pink into peach, lemon into orange, mauve into blue, crimson into cherry — with green and yellow centres. Between them sway small unopened buds on long stems of turquoise, pink and pale green. The composition is loose: the flowers grow at different heights and lean in different directions. The background is a solid black plane, and it is exactly what stays free of beads: coverage is partial, with beads on the flowers, the buds and the stems only, so the colours read especially vividly. Each petal carries its own gradient, and that is where most of the seventeen shades are used.
