“Brigantine” shows a lighthouse on a rocky headland, a house under a red roof and sailing ships passing the shore.

What the picture shows

Right of centre stands a white lighthouse with a golden lantern on top and an openwork railing. A house with red tiles, chimneys and a white veranda nestles against it on the left, with a spreading tree behind. The slope is covered with shrubs bearing pink, crimson and white flowers, and a stone stair runs down to a strip of sand. On the right a ship under full sail crosses the sea, and another shows near the horizon on the left. Waves break over dark boulders. The sky is a soft evening pink. The beadwork is partial: beads cover the flowers, the shrubs, the steps, the walls and roof, the lighthouse lantern and the foam on the water, while the sky, the sea and the ships stay printed. The composition runs on a diagonal: from the flowering slope on the left up to the lighthouse and on out to the open sea. The whole scene is painted in soft evening light.
