“Breath of Autumn” — a full bouquet of yellow flowers in a round glass vase, painted in broad palette-knife strokes. Warm light against a dark ground.

What the picture shows

The bouquet occupies the whole upper part of the canvas: dozens of small yellow and orange blooms with red centres gathered into a dense globe, with green leaves and thin stems showing between them. The round glass vase, with yellow-white highlights, stands on a table that glows warm orange. The background is dark — blue-violet and emerald strokes laid on thickly, almost in relief. A few fallen flowers lie at the lower left. The stitching is partial: beads cover all the flowers, their centres, the leaves, the stems and the vase with its highlights, while the dark background and the glowing orange table stay printed — and it is that contrast which holds the whole composition together.
