Description

“Birches” shows birch trees above a quiet forest river in the first warm month of summer. A calm landscape with no people in it.

What the picture shows

A large birch holds the composition on the right and above: a white trunk marked with black, leaning over the water, its thin branches and small leaves hanging almost to the surface. The foliage runs through every shade of green — lime, lemon, deep dark green. On the left is a bank of tall grass, bushes and distant trees, with the sky brightening beyond them. The river is smooth and greenish blue, reflecting the trees and the bank completely. White daisies show in the grass at the lower right. Coverage is partial: beads work the crown, the trunk, the grass, the daisies and a few highlights on the water, while the water itself, the sky and the far forest stay printed on the canvas.
