“Autumn Tale” is a mountain lake in October colour: crimson and golden trees, hazy peaks and still water.

What the picture shows

Tall trees stand along the banks in red, orange and yellow leaf: on the left the crown is almost entirely crimson, on the right a golden birch rises on a slender trunk. Broad, calm water lies in the middle with two small islands of russet bushes, and mountains rise behind it in a blue haze. The sky is pale, with soft clouds. In the foreground there is lush green grass with yellow flowers and young growth. Coverage is partial: beads go on the leaves, crowns, grass and the highlights on the water, while the sky, mountains, water and trunks stay printed on the canvas — which is what keeps the haze. The picture is built on three planes: grass in front, water in the middle, mountains far off. The strongest colours gather at the edges while the centre is left pale and calm, so the eye can rest.
