“Autumn strings” — an autumn bouquet and a dish of fruit against a town wrapped in blue haze.

What the picture shows

On the right stands a tall blue jug holding branches covered in gold and russet leaves together with yellow chrysanthemums; beneath it lies a broad-brimmed hat carrying yellow apples and pears wound about with leaves and light ribbons. To the left and further back is the town in silvery blue: a domed church, a bell tower, tiled roofs, a horse and carriage, frost-covered trees. The whole picture is built on the contrast between the cold blue-grey ground and the warm gold of the leaves. Coverage is partial: the leaves, flowers, fruit, jug and the outlines of the buildings are beaded, while the misty background stays printed. There is a great deal of detail here, but none of it competes: the warm gold is gathered on the right and along the bottom, while the cold town recedes into the distance.
