Description

“Autumn Story” is a city street in the rain: a wrought-iron lamppost at the centre, shop lights and a figure with an umbrella on wet cobbles.

What the picture shows

The composition is symmetrical, with deep perspective into the frame. On the left there is a pale building with blue shutters and a tree in red and orange; on the right a long row of façades with lit shopfronts and dark stair railings. A three-lantern lamppost rises at the very centre, and behind it the sky lightens in broad blue and ochre strokes. A woman with an umbrella walks down the street with another figure beside her, and a yellow awning shows further on. Below are puddles with long streaks of coloured light. The colours are warm below and cool above, which makes the street feel deeper than it is. The beading is partial: the circles fall on the lamppost, the foliage, the outlines of the buildings, the windows and the reflections, while the sky and the sweeping strokes of the roadway stay printed.
