Description

“Autumn Girl” shows a young woman's face beneath a lavish hat woven from flowers.

What the picture shows

Her face, with lowered eyes, fills the lower part of the design and is painted in warm peach tones. Above it spreads a hat of large blossoms: pink and magenta petals edged with yellow, white and lilac florets, closed buds, long curving leaves and thin tendrils hanging down. The composition is dense and the flowers fill almost the whole field. The background is warm, in orange and yellow-green watercolour washes. The beading is partial: beads cover the flowers, leaves and tendrils, while the face, neck and blurred background stay printed on the canvas, so the portrait keeps its smooth transitions.
