Description

“At the Edge” is a summer day in open country: a few birches on a rise, a winding stream and a high sky full of cumulus.

What the picture shows

The upper third is a pale blue sky with big white clouds settling towards the horizon. Below it, a little left of centre, stand three birches with white trunks and light green-yellow crowns; a further band of trees runs back to the right, and a distant wood turns blue on the horizon. The ground is covered in lush grass, from dark green in shadow to lime in the light. A narrow stream with a sandy bank runs across the meadow, an old two-rail wooden fence stands in the right foreground, and small white and yellow flowers bloom at the bottom left. The beading is partial but almost continuous: the trees, the grass, the bushes and the far distance are beaded, while the sky and clouds stay printed.
