“Aquarelle Irises” — a spray of irises painted in watercolour, with soft blurred transitions.

What the picture shows

The flowers open out like a fan: pale, almost white and soft yellow irises in the centre, lilac, violet and raspberry ones to either side, all with the characteristic ruffled petals and warm beards. Long narrow leaves fan downwards and a few budded stems reach beyond the bouquet. The background is a free watercolour wash of lavender, greyish-lilac and pale yellow patches with visible runs and bleeds. Twenty-four bead colours make it possible to carry all the half-tones of the petals. Coverage is partial: the flowers and leaves are beaded, while the washed background stays printed on the canvas, keeping the lightness of the original. Each flower sits at its own angle, so the bouquet looks freshly gathered rather than arranged to pose.
