What the picture shows

The girl is at the centre: her hair gathered and bound with a golden ribbon, her face turned down, her hands resting on her knee. The bodice of her dress shimmers with a small floral pattern in gold, pink, green and blue beads, and the skirt spreads across the floor as a wide fan of coloured strokes — pink, mauve, ochre, turquoise. Her legs are in pale blue tights and pointe shoes with red ribbons. In the depth, several ballerinas in white tutus are shown only by their legs and skirts, in a soft greyish-blue haze.
