“African girl” — a woman's profile against a large yellow sun, framed by dense patterning. A decorative piece built on pure colour.

What the picture shows

The face is shown in profile, eyes closed and chin lifted: warm ochre skin, turquoise eyelids, red lips. A pattern of small dots covers the cheek and temple, and round floral rosettes sit in the hair. The hair falls in orange-red waves to the left. Behind her is a large lemon-yellow disc of sun with pink flowers inside it. The edges of the canvas are filled with bands of ornament: pink and turquoise zigzags, white circles on red, green and blue roundels, small triangles. The beadwork is partial: beads cover the ornament bands at the edges, the dotted pattern on the face, the rosettes, the outline of the sun and the flowers within it, while the face itself, the hair and the yellow field of the sun stay printed on the canvas.
