Description

“Sailboat” shows a two-masted ship on the crest of a wave, with a red pennant at the mast and gulls in the sky.

What the picture shows

The sails are laid in white and pearl beads, and it is these that give the sense of canvas filled with wind. The masts, yards and rigging are beaded in gold, the hull in brown, and the wave beneath it in white-and-blue arcs. The sky is a printed blue circle with gulls drawn in fine strokes; they stay printed, as do the pale corners of the canvas. On art canvas the beading is not solid — here it works as outline and volume rather than full coverage. Most of the work goes into the sails: that is where the beads gather and where the main shine comes from. The hull and the wave take much less time.
