“Owl – 1” shows a stylised owl with large green eyes sitting on a dark branch.

What the picture shows

The owl's body is worked in pink, beige and brown beads in horizontal rows, with the wing marked by a pale arc of pearl beads. The eyes are large, with green irises and white rims, and the beak is two golden beads. The branch below is set in black beads and carries a white flower with a yellow centre. The grey-blue ground with its printed swirls and circles is left as it is: on art canvas the beads are not solid. The rows across the body run in different colours, so the owl looks pieced together from scraps — that is the point of the design. The beak and the eyes go in last: how precisely they sit decides the whole expression of the owl.
