Description

“Melancholy” shows a sheep in a white bonnet gazing thoughtfully over a row of pots.

What the picture shows

The face takes the centre: white fleece in pearl beads, the bonnet outlined in white, the eyes large and a little sad, the pink cheeks left printed. Green shrubs and potted cacti grow around, and a bush of red roses blooms on the left in dense clusters of beads. A row of round pots stands in front, outlined in cream and pink beads. The sky and the grass stay as watercolour printing: on art canvas the beads do not cover the surface. Most of the beads go into the greenery — the shrubs are worked in tight clusters, and they are what gives the piece its depth. The sheep's gaze is what carries the piece: the eyes and brows are just a few dark beads, yet the whole mood depends on them.
