Description

“Happy New Year – 8” shows a golden bear from behind in a striped hat, with a small bird beside it.

What the picture shows

The hat is built from red, white and purple beads, with a sprig of green leaves and red berries on one side. The scarf is red and green as well. Below, two pink soles outlined in pink beads peep out — the detail that makes the picture recognisable. On the right sits a ginger bird in a green scarf. A holly twig in green and red beads lies at the bottom, and bands of white and pale blue beads mark the snowdrift. The sky with printed snowflakes and white beads standing in for falling snow complete the scene. The soles are the joke of the picture: they read from a distance and explain at once that the bear is sitting with its back to us. The three-colour hat is stitched in rows from the pompom down and takes the longest.
