“Happy New Year – 5” shows a snowman in a black top hat waving a mitten against a deep blue winter evening.

What the picture shows

The hat is worked in black beads with a band of red and yellow ones. The carrot nose stays printed, the eyes and buttons are single black beads, and a long string of white and red beads runs across the body. The mittens are red with beaded cuffs. Large snowflakes in pale blue beads hang around the figure, smaller ones remain printed, and a drift of white and blue beads runs along the bottom. A border of yellow beads closes the design on all four sides. The snowman's body and the blue sky stay printed — the beads pick out the outlines and details. This design is denser than its neighbours: the border and the many snowflakes use more beads, which is also why it looks the most festive. The hat is stitched first, as it sets the proportions of the whole scene.
