Description

“Cancer” shows a red crayfish sitting on a pale crescent moon under water.

What the picture shows

The crayfish is worked in red beads of different tones: a darker shell, lighter claws, the feelers run as fine lines. The crescent moon beneath is set in white and yellow beads with the tips curling upwards. The blue ground is water, with bubbles of faceted light blue beads floating unevenly through it. The word for Cancer runs across the top in light blue beads. The ground itself stays printed: on art canvas the beads do not cover the surface. The bubbles go in last, one bead at a time, and they are what makes the scene read as water. The red shell is the densest passage and it is what holds the composition together on the cool blue field. The moon is beaded straight after it, and then only the bubbles remain.
