Description

“Bear's greeting” shows a panda peeping out from among large pink flowers.

What the picture shows

The flowers around it are worked in pink, peach and cream beads: the petals laid in half-circles, the centres in darker beads. The panda sits in the middle, its ears, paws and eyes black, its body white and outlined in pearl beads. A branch with mint-green leaves runs to the right. The printed pale pink roses on the white ground are left as watercolour: on art canvas the beads are not solid. The beaded flowers sit directly over the printed ones, so it looks as if part of the bouquet has stepped forward. The panda is smaller than the flowers and takes only the middle, so the piece reads more like a bouquet with someone hiding in it. The petals are beaded in half-circles from the edge inwards, and that direction is what gives them volume.
