Description
A cat's face painted over with golden ornament looks straight at the viewer — “The look of a witch” rests on those eyes.
What the picture shows
The image is built as a mirror: both halves of the face repeat each other. Huge amber eyes with vertical pupils fill the upper third of the canvas, golden curls rise above them instead of brows, and a pale lyre-shaped ornament sits between them. Cheeks, nose and chin are covered with interlacing copper and blue patterns, and the whiskers are drawn as thin pale lines over dark blue. Lower down the ornament turns into a pattern of circles and spirals of its own. The range is dark blue, turquoise, copper and gold, with almost no light areas, so most of the work goes into small ornamental shapes. The mirrored drawing makes the work easier: the left and right halves can be painted with one colour in turn.
