A bookmark is the shortest route from «I would like to try cross stitch» to an object you actually use every day. The stitched area is 65×180 mm, eleven colours, and you see the result after a few evenings rather than after half a year. Here is the AHK series, and why a small format is often a better start than a large picture.
The five designs

The designs share a mood: magic, symbolism, nature, slightly mysterious imagery. They are small stories rather than abstract ornament, which is why a finished bookmark sits equally well in a novel and in a notebook.
Two fabrics in one kit
The most interesting thing about this series is what is in the box. There is not one piece of fabric but two: white and black, both 14-count Aida, 210×90 mm. You choose the background yourself, and the same design reads very differently on each.

The second piece of fabric is not wasted: keep it for a second attempt, or stitch a pair of bookmarks — one to keep and one to give away.
What else is in the kit
- Threads — 57 m in total, of which 30 m is decorative metallic gold thread.
- A decorative gold tassel for the finished bookmark.
- A traditional printed colour chart.
- QR codes for the digital formats: a PDF for any screen and a file for popular mobile stitching apps.
Metallic thread is half of the total length here, and it behaves differently from stranded cotton: it springs back and twists more. Cut shorter lengths than usual, around 30–40 cm, and let the needle hang free from time to time so the thread can untwist.
How long it takes
Difficulty is medium and the stitched area is 65×180 mm. For a beginner that is roughly 8–14 hours, so four to six evenings. For comparison, an average 25×30 cm cross-stitch picture is 40–90 hours. That is exactly why a bookmark works so well as a first project: you go through the whole cycle, from the first stitch to a finished object, before you have time to get tired of it.

Assembling the finished bookmark
Once the stitching is done, a few steps remain: wash and dry the work, press it from the back through a cloth, trim the Aida leaving a seam allowance, turn the edges under and fasten the tassel through the top. The result stays soft and does not break the spine of a book.
