Description

“Twilight Over the Sea” shows a yellow vintage car coming down a narrow road towards the coast just as the sun drops into the water. The mood is that of an unhurried southern journey.

What the picture shows

To the right a cliff rises above the road, terraced, with white tiled houses and a band of lilac lavender on the slope. To the left the verge is ablaze with flowers: red, orange, crimson and violet blooms laid in short dense strokes. The sea shimmers in pearly grey-blue, a golden sun path runs into it, and the sky above the horizon is peach and pink with lilac clouds. The rounded body of the car is the warmest yellow note in the whole composition. Beads densely cover the flowers, the car, the road and the clouds, while the distant hills and part of the water stay as print, which makes the perspective recede convincingly. The road leads the eye from the near edge straight to the sun, so a modest canvas ends up looking genuinely spacious.
