Description

“Highland Belle” is a portrait of a Highland cow with a long ginger fringe and wide curving horns. She looks out from behind a bank of large peonies as if she has just been disturbed, and there is more curiosity than sternness in that gaze.

What the picture shows

The muzzle and the thick shaggy coat are worked in warm ginger and chestnut tones with cream highlights; the horns are greyish cream with dark tips and the damp nose is almost pink. A wreath of flowers surrounds the animal from below: pink peonies with cream centres, white daisies with yellow eyes, round peach and lilac blooms, and dark green leaves with sharp edges. The background is watercolour blue running downwards in thin drips, as if the paint were still wet. Beads cover the coat, the horns and the flowers, while the soft washed background stays as print on the canvas — that contrast is what pushes the face and the petals forward.
