Description

“Embodiment of Cunning” is a portrait of a red fox against a dark grey ground: the head is turned to the side while the turquoise eyes look straight at the viewer. The image is decorative and very much alive at the same time.

What the picture shows

The fur is stitched in long curving strands that follow its natural direction, from deep brown near the pointed ears to honey, gold and almost white on the chest, so the coat looks ruffled by wind. The sharp ears with their dark tips stand upright. A turquoise circle glows behind the head like a moon, and blue, emerald and violet splashes, slim stems and small drops of beadwork scatter from below and from the sides. The nose, the whiskers and the tufts on the ears are picked out in separate pale stitches that stand noticeably above the surface of the picture. The dark canvas around stays mostly as print, and it is against it that the red fur shines brightest — the warm-cool contrast holds the whole composition together.
