Description

“Tropical Guest” is a hummingbird hovering beside a large pink hibiscus. The tiny bird is the main character, yet a whole cloud of tropical blossom around it competes for attention.

What the picture shows

The hummingbird's plumage is put together from cool shades: its back and open wing shift through emerald, turquoise, blue and violet, while the throat and breast are warm ochre-orange. The long slim beak reaches straight into the heart of the flower. On the right a big pink hibiscus has opened with crimson veining, an orange one sits below it, and white and raspberry blooms glow in the upper corners among lush green leaves. The background is grey with turquoise and lilac washes, and thin threads of single beads hang down it like drops. Beadwork covers the bird, the flowers and the leaves, while most of the background stays as print on the canvas, which is what makes the scene read in relief, with the blooms and the bird standing clearly out from the grey surface.
