Description

“Born to Shine” is the profile of a young woman in a lavish golden headdress whose rays spread out across a graphite background. The mood is solemn and slightly mysterious: her face stays calm and almost colourless, while all the glow is gathered around it.

What the picture shows

The composition rests on the contrast between warm gold and a cool dark grey ground. A beaded ring is laid around the head, and thin rays run out from it in every direction: solid strands gradually break into dotted lines of single beads, and the further they travel from the centre the sparser they become. At the top the headdress ends in curved plumes of copper, amber and ochre, and a long earring drops from the temple. A beaded collar with chains and teardrop pendants falls over the shoulder. The face, the neck and the background stay as print on the canvas — the smooth grey surface next to the raised beadwork only strengthens the sense of shine.
