Description

“Sea Sonata” is a musical stave flowing in waves across a light canvas together with shells, starfish and a blue curl of a wave. The whole piece is about the way the sea sounds.

What the picture shows

Stave lines with notes and a treble clef run diagonally across the picture, stitched in golden brown and dark beads. On the left a spiral of wave curls up, from deep blue and ultramarine to turquoise and near white, with a pearly shell resting inside it. Starfish in a warm sandy colour spread out beside it, a striped snail shell sits at the lower right, and a large scallop valve is placed above. The background is pale, with blue and gold splashes like watercolour runs; most of it stays as print on the canvas, which is why the beaded details look raised and catch the light. The cool blue-turquoise range of the wave and the warm golden range of the shells and the stave lines keep the composition in balance.
