Description

“Moon Maiden” shows a red-haired young woman with a sword standing in a night meadow in bloom, a huge full moon rising behind her head. The scene is quiet and inward, with no battle tension in it at all.

What the picture shows

The figure is given in profile: long wavy hair in copper-red falls below her waist, and the gown is dark green with gold embroidery, a shaped shoulder piece and a hem that reaches the grass. She rests both hands on the sword, its point driven into the ground. The moon is stitched in pale golden cream beads and works as a halo, while the background is a deep blue-grey night sky with fine gold stars. Below, the meadow is thick with flowers: sunflowers, orange and yellow heads, blue cornflowers, small white and lilac petals, dry grass spikes. The warm colours of the meadow balance the cold blue of the sky, and the gold of the moon and the copper of her hair answer the yellow flower heads below.
