Description

“Alpha Wolf” shows the face of a grey wolf directly in front of a large copper moon, with a dark coniferous forest rising on either side. The gaze is calm and direct.

What the picture shows

The fur is worked in grey, white, bluish and graphite beads laid along the direction of growth — from the nose out to the cheekbones, then down onto the chest — so the texture really reads as fur. The eyes are amber yellow, rimmed with dark and narrowed at the pupil. Behind hangs a full moon in warm orange and peach, mottled with craters. Sharp spruces and pines stand at the edges, dark against the sky, and from below the wolf sparks fly upward while orange trails run down as if from heat. The sky is black with fine stars. Beads cover the face, the moon and the sparks, while the forest and the night sky stay mostly as print on the canvas. The face fills almost the entire centre of the canvas, so the portrait comes out large, frontal and very direct in mood.
