Description

“Neon Poppies” shows three large poppies glowing orange against an almost black ground, as if lit by neon — a contemporary reading of a classic flower subject.

What the picture shows

The petals run from bright orange and carrot red to deep crimson at the base, with thin pale outlines along the edges; those outlines are what create the glow, while the tone inside each flower drops almost to black. The centres are violet, with lilac rays and an emerald dot at the very middle. Stems, cut leaves and unopened buds are worked in a cold range — blue-violet with turquoise veins — so warm and cool sit directly against each other. Small coloured dots scatter around the blooms. The background is an even dark graphite and stays as bare canvas: the beads work only on the flowers and stems, which pushes the contrast as far as it will go. The three blooms are set on a diagonal running from the top edge of the canvas to the bottom.
