Description

“Dream” is a view from below: yellow dandelions filling the whole foreground, a high blue sky with white clouds, and an aeroplane passing somewhere far above.

What the picture shows

The flowers are seen from a low angle, so the dandelion heads look large and rounded: they are worked in yellow, gold and warm ochre beads with darker centres, the petals radiating in fine rays. The stems are thick and juicy green, almost emerald in places, with grass and unopened buds between them. The sky takes the upper half of the canvas and shifts from saturated blue to pale near the clouds, which are laid in white and grey-blue. The aeroplane is a small dark blue silhouette with outstretched wings, near the centre of the sky. Beads cover the flowers, the clouds and the plane, while part of the sky and the grass stays as painterly print with visible brush strokes. The low angle makes ordinary meadow flowers large and the aeroplane tiny, and the whole subject rests on that shift of scale.
