Description

“City of dreams” is a night metropolis laid out in gold and copper beads straight onto graphite canvas: an avenue runs into the distance with a thin crescent moon hanging above it.

What the picture shows

The composition rests on strict perspective: two walls of skyscrapers converge on a point at the horizon, with a dark empty road between them and a centre line made of single beads. Windows, cornices, street lamps and roofs are worked in rows of gold, bronze and warm sand beads of different sizes, so the buildings glitter like real illumination, while the towers further back are deliberately finer and smaller. Above hangs an openwork crescent with a pattern inside it and a scatter of stars around. The canvas itself stays an even dark grey and carries almost no printed image: the entire picture is made by the beads and the bugle beads, and that is the whole idea of the piece. There are deliberately few colours, so the effect rests on bead size and on the direction of the rows.
