Description

“Blooming Thoughts” is a portrait of a young woman whose face is half hidden behind large flowers. Only the lips, chin and shoulders are visible; the rest is covered by a generous bouquet.

What the picture shows

The flowers are big peony-like blooms in pink, lilac, cream and white, with yellow-orange centres and dense green leaves. They are beaded solidly, with clear shifts of shade inside each petal, which makes them look rounded. The woman's face, neck and shoulders stay as print on the canvas — warm tanned skin, damp dark hair — and it is exactly this contrast between beaded and printed that makes the composition. The background is a deep blue-violet; on the left and right, pink and magenta bars rise across it like bursts of light, and these are beaded as well. Several damp strands of hair escape from under the flowers, and small droplets show on the shoulder — details that stay as print and set off the beadwork well.
