Description

“The Murmuring Sea…” is a great wave against an orange sky, handled in the spirit of a Japanese woodblock print. The piece is horizontal and almost poster-strong in colour.

What the picture shows

On the left the main wave rears up with a white foaming crest that breaks into separate fingers; smaller swells follow behind it. The water runs from deep blue and emerald in the troughs to turquoise and near white on the crests, and every swell is laid in rows of beads that follow its own line, which is what produces the sense of movement. The sky is an even orange-coral, with a gold disc of sun sending out rays and stylised red-orange clouds on the right. In the upper left corner there is a stylised inscription in the Japanese manner. The sky stays as print; the water, the sun, the clouds and the inscription are beaded. The fine spray above the crest is worked in single pale beads, so the foam never turns into one solid patch.
