Description

“The Exotic Beau” is a toucan on a branch among tropical growth, shown at almost life size. The whole piece rests on the contrast between the dark bird and the hot colours of the jungle around it.

What the picture shows

The beak is the brightest part of the picture: it runs from red and orange into yellow and cream, with a black tip. The bird's chest and collar are golden yellow, the body a deep blue-black with a violet sheen, the eye ringed in pale blue. The branch under it is brown and carries small berries. Around them are pink hibiscus flowers, crimson and purple leaves, green palm fans and tiny yellow and red blossoms. The muted dark turquoise background stays as print on the canvas; beads cover the bird, the flowers and the foliage, which pushes the jungle forward. Small insects and one more flower can be seen by the trunk on the right, so the second plane is never left empty.
