Description

“Silent Night” is a night landscape with a large golden crescent moon hanging over a lone cottage. The windows glow warm yellow, and the whole scene turns calm, almost like a fairy tale.

What the picture shows

The sky is deep blue and sown with small gold stars, and the moon is worked in ochre, gold and cream beads with a visible surface texture. On either side of it the clouds curl into spirals of pale blue, blue and white, a device that recalls Van Gogh's manner. The cottage below is dark, with a steep roof and a chimney; its windows and the lantern by the porch are the warmest spots in the piece. The firs on both sides and the stony path at the bottom are worked in grey, blue and dark green. The microbeads go into the stars and the reflections in the windows, adding fine sparkle exactly where light is needed. A tall dark fir rises to the right of the house, and a lower outbuilding with the same yellow window stands to the left, so together they close off the yard.

The piece is narrow and vertical, so it fits easily between windows, in an alcove or beside a staircase. The palette is mostly dark, which makes the light accents read all the more clearly, and towards evening the piece looks stronger still. Gallery finishing is possible — no frame or mount.
