Description

“Shades of Summer” is a large butterfly settled among meadow flowers, with what looks like the entire summer palette gathered in its wings. The background is dark grey, almost stormy, and the colours ring especially clear against it.

What the picture shows

The wings run through a full sequence of shades: orange and gold along the upper edge, then pink and lilac, then turquoise, blue and grass green closer to the body, all divided into segments by black veins. The body and antennae are dark, nearly black. Around the butterfly is a meadow bouquet — a big orange bloom with a yellow centre in the lower left, a white daisy, blue cornflowers, and small red and orange florets on thin green stems. Beads cover the butterfly, the flowers and the leaves, while the grey background stays as print on the canvas, so the plants seem to glow on it. The upper edge of the right wing is lit gold, as if sun were falling on it through a cloud, and it is the only warm patch of light in the scene.
