Description

“Waves of Color” is a portrait of an aquarium betta whose long fins spread across the whole canvas like ribbons in water. The dark graphite background removes everything else and leaves only the movement of colour.

What the picture shows

The body shifts from bronze and mother-of-pearl to silver, while the fins and tail trail off in long strands of crimson, purple, blue and turquoise, veined with warm orange. The strands are worked in rows of beads that follow the line of each fin, which is why they really read as waves streaming behind the fish. Round bubbles of different sizes are scattered around: some are filled with beads solidly, others are marked by only a few. The microbeads add fine sparkle at the thinnest tips of the fins and inside the bubbles. The background stays as print — flat, almost black, with no detail, so every colour shows at full strength. The eye is large, with a black pupil and a pale rim, and it is what holds the image together so that it does not dissolve into fins alone.
