Description

“Roses for the Soul” is a bouquet of garden roses painted in broad palette-knife strokes and gathered into an almost square composition. Five open blooms hold together against a mint-turquoise background, and the piece reads fresh and summery without turning sweet.

What the picture shows

At the centre sits a large terracotta-orange rose with a dark heart; around it are pink and lilac flowers shot through with cream and ochre, and one more half-open bud in the lower right. The leaves and small buds stay in a cool range — cobalt, blue, turquoise, with occasional green and yellow — and it is exactly this warm-cool contrast that holds the picture together. The background, laid down in wide mint and pale blue strokes, stays as print on the artist canvas. Beads cover the petals, leaves and stems, so the flowers stand slightly above the matte ground and catch the light from different angles.
