Description

“Queen of hearts” is a playing card on which a dark-haired queen in a gold crown looks straight at the viewer. Deep red roses open on either side of her, and a large red heart sits below.

What the picture shows

The face stays as print on the canvas while everything around it is stitched: the black waved hair, the crown set with red stones, the heavy necklace, the earrings, the patterned black-and-gold bodice. The card border is worked in gold beads, with the letter Q and heart symbols in the corners. The roses are built from individual petals in several shades of red, from near-black in shadow to bright along the edge. The white field of the card also stays as print, which is why the gold and red read so sharply against it.
