Description

“Evening over the meadow” is a Tuscan landscape at sunset: a tile-roofed house on a hill, cypresses beside it, and fields running down to the foreground as one continuous carpet of flowers.

What the picture shows

The sky is laid out in broad bands: lilac and blue at the top, then pink, then orange near the horizon, with a large sun disc worked as a spiral of pale beads. Blue mountains and the small silhouettes of a town sit in the distance. The fields move in waves — yellow, orange, green, lilac, with violet stripes of lavender. Large red poppies and blue cornflowers fill the foreground as separate patches of colour. Beadwork covers almost the whole canvas, and the thirty-four shades are there precisely for the gradual transitions in the sky and the fields.
