Description

“Lurking” shows a black cat peering out from between large monstera leaves. Only the face and a pair of watchful amber eyes are visible; the rest of the animal is lost in the dark.

What the picture shows

The leaves are worked in grey-blue and silvery beads with dark veins, and ochre and turquoise tones break through here and there along the edges. The cat's face nearly merges with the background: it is laid in black and dark blue, with only the whiskers, the nose and the pale dots above the eyes picked out separately. The eyes are the brightest point of the piece, built from orange and gold beads around a narrow black pupil. The dark gaps between the leaves stay as print on the canvas, so the whole stitching works on the contrast of pale foliage against a black figure.
