Description

“Spirit of the Prairies” shows a horse's head in profile, its mane spilling in curling strands across the whole canvas. The format is narrow and tall, so the mane takes up most of the picture.

What the picture shows

The muzzle is worked in shades running from dark chestnut to pale sand, with a white blaze along the nose and dark velvety nostrils; the eye is large, with a violet sheen. The mane is laid out in separate twisted strands — red, copper, cream, almost white — each following its own row of beads, so every curl reads on its own. The background is grey-blue: the white wave ornament at the bottom is beaded and echoes the movement of the mane, while the flat areas stay as print on the canvas.
