Description

“Hero of the Christmas Night” is a nutcracker in a green shako, built up in strict symmetry the way folk painting is. Gold stems curl around him with berries, bells and bullfinches, while the background stays a quiet grey-olive.

What the picture shows

The figure is assembled in tiers: a green tunic with gold buttons, dark cherry trousers, tall gold boots, a black moustache and pink cheeks. Red-breasted birds sit symmetrically on either side, and spotted red bells hang above and below him. Branches, curls and the border are worked in gold beads, while small white flowers and snowflakes add scattered light points. The olive background stays as print on the canvas, and that is exactly where the gold shines brightest.
