Description

“Crystal patterns” shows seven Christmas ornaments hanging on thin gold chains: baubles, medallions and snowflake stars, all in blues. The mood is calm and a little old-fashioned, like a box of decorations handed down through a family.

What the picture shows

Every bauble carries its own pattern: one is covered in cobalt stripes with a turquoise band, another in a diamond lattice, a third holds a large gold star at its centre. The blue is broken into many shades, from near-black night to pale ice, while gold runs along the chains, the caps and the rays of the stars. The beads are laid in tight circles that follow each round shape, which is what gives them their volume. The ivory background stays as print on the canvas, so the ornaments read as silhouettes suspended in the air.
