Description

“Golden talisman” shows a golden snake coiled into a smooth loop on a dark blue ground among stars, a sun and a young moon. The design is spare and decorative, closer to a piece of jewellery than to a picture.

What the picture shows

The snake's body is worked in rows of gold and bronze beads, with a dark red line of tiny beads running along its back to emphasise every curve. The head is raised, and a ring with a small round pendant hangs below the loop. Two suns with rays laid in long bugle beads sit to the left and right, and a slim crescent moon with a star appears at the top left. The whole background is sown with small golden specks and four-pointed stars of different sizes, spaced unevenly like a real night sky. Glass bicones add a glint at a few points. The dark blue canvas is left unstitched and works as night, against which the gold reads very clearly. The whole design is built on one unbroken line that leads the eye round in a circle and brings it back to the snake's head.
