Description

“An inspiring palette” shows a field of tulips in full bloom: red, coral, pink and violet cups stand close together, almost touching.

What the picture shows

There are many flowers, and each is beaded separately in rows that follow the petal, so the cups come out rounded rather than reading as flat patches of colour. The palette runs from bright red and terracotta through coral and soft pink to lilac and deep violet; on several tulips the petals are two-toned, lighter at the edges and darker towards the middle. Long curving leaves rise between the blooms, worked in light and dark green with turquoise highlights, while thin stems are only just visible in the depth of the picture. The background is dark grey-blue, lightening towards the top into lilac and pink clouds. That background stays as print on the artist canvas, so the stitched tulips come forward and the darkness behind them intensifies their colour. The tulips stand at different heights: some are fully open, others still hold the shape of a goblet. The composition fills the canvas edge to edge, leaving almost no empty ground.
