Description

“The gift of the sun” is a bouquet of sunflowers turned straight towards the viewer. Warm cream and orange against a cool grey-blue ground is what carries the whole piece.

What the picture shows

The composition holds four large blooms and several buds on slender stalks. The petals are beaded from milky white and cream through warm yellow to saturated orange at the base, so each flower seems lit from within while its petal tips stay pale. The centres are dark brown, worked in small beads and ringed with golden specks. Below, broad green leaves with dark veins and long stems built from brown and ochre beads reach downwards. Between them curve dry leaves in a warm russet tone. The background is a wash of blurred grey-blue and turquoise strokes with lighter gaps; it stays as print on the artist canvas, and the beads sit only on the flowers, the leaves and the stems. The blooms face in different directions — one straight ahead, the others tilted aside — so the bouquet never looks stiff.
