Description

“Safe haven” shows a town on a cliff above the sea: colourful houses stand tightly one above another, and below, in a sheltered bay, boats rock on the water.

What the picture shows

The buildings climb in steps from the waterline to the top of the rock: the facades are beaded in red, orange, ochre, pink and turquoise, windows and doors marked by dark squares, with balconies and stairways visible between the houses here and there. Above the roofs stand a stone tower and dark green trees. To the right lie a calm blue sea and a cloudless sky. Below, the water is dark and almost mirror-like, with white boats trimmed in turquoise scattered across it, and grey boulders of different sizes piled along the shore. The beadwork covers the houses, the boats and the reflections on the water, while the sky, the rocks and part of the sea stay as print on the artist canvas — which pushes the town forward and lets the space around it breathe. The facade colours repeat across the whole hillside, so the motley little town still reads as one coherent thing.
